The Brontë Soul

Branwell Brontë (1817-48)

Born Patrick Branwell Brontë in 1817 to Patrick and Maria while they were living at Thornton, West Yorkshire. He was the fourth child and remained the only son born to the couple. Branwell was edicated at home by his father, and received a thorough education in the classics, history, geography, and the Bible. Like the rest of the Brontë children, Branwell was a avaricious readers and he especially enjoyed the classics as he translated them frequently. At a young age Branwell received a set of toy soilders. The children use these soilders and their endless imagination to compose and act out plays. Eventually, Emily and Anne paired off to work on the Gondal saga while Branwell paired off with Charlotte to explore their imaginary world of Angria. Branwell aspired to be a poet, but in his later teens he started developing his artistic talents. His most famous painting is that of his sisters in the "Pillar Portrait". Recent xrays have shown that Branwell started a portrait of himself in the arrangement, but decided against it, for whatever reason, before he finished his likeness.
